CinemaTours: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a 2017 American science fiction superhero comedy film that came out on April 10, 2017 in Tokyo and May 5, 2017 in the United States. Let's explore this awesome movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 picks up where the 2014 blockbuster film Guardians of the Galaxy left off. In this film, the Guardians are hired by the Sovereign, a powerful alien race, to protect precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket Raccoon stole the devices, the Sovereign resolve to hunt them down. During their escape, team leader Star-Lord learns where he came from.

Like its predecessor, GotGV2 is set in outer space. The film balances light-hearted and serious moments, with the antics of an infant Groot being among the highlights. Also, the Sovereign homeworld and Ego's planet have a divine feel to it, almost like Asgard in Thor.

The film's primary theme is family. Star-Lord was raised by Ravager Yondu Udonta after his mother died, and meets his biological father 26 years later, leading to him being forced to choose who he should look up to. Other themes include redemption and second chances, represented by Yondu, who was kicked out of the Ravagers for child trafficking.

Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Dave Bautista (Spectre), Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Michael Rooker (Cliffhanger), and Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) reprise their roles as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Yondu, and Nebula, respectively. The cast is joined by Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), and Kurt Russell (Sky High) as Sovereign High Priestess Ayesha, Ravager leader Stakar Ogord, and Star-Lord's godlike father, Ego the Living Planet, respectively. Before Russell was cast as Ego, Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music), Matthew McConaughey (True Detective), and Al Pacino (The Godfather) were considered for the role.

I noticed several allusions throughout the film. Like in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, the main character is shocked to learn who his father is. Like in Judge Dredd, Sylvester Stallone's character calls out a renegade member of his organization, telling him, "You betrayed the X!"

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is an amazing film. The film's main message is that although family members fight, they still have each other's backs. Well, that concludes our tour. I bid you farewell until we meet again.
